Lightbulb Initiative
As was sent out via email, TAS has undertaken to collect energy-efficient lightbulbs to support disadvantaged communities as our social responsibility project this year. We need your help!! All you need to do is pop one of these lightbulbs (available from all major retailers for approximately R20) into your trolley next time you are doing your shopping. Bring these to your office and place them in the boxes provided (please ask your TAS representative where these are in your firm or contact Surene Fourie at surene.fourie@kpmg.co.za for more information). These will be distributed to the communities by the TAS committee. There is a prize for the firm which collects the most lightbulbs relative to it's trainee body so get your whole firm involved! Not only will this project brighten up so many lives by saving on electricity bills but is also a great way to help in the fight to save the planet!
Your support for this initiative is greatly appreciated!

Thuthuka/SAICA Schools Competition
October 2009
Over the past two years, SAICA has run a Business Game, in association with Thuthuka (a bursary program for underprivileged learners to study Accounting at University.)
Schools in the greater Cape Town area are invited to attend and send teams of 10 learners to participate in the game. Most learners are in grade 10 or 11.
The aim of the game is for each team to run a manufacturing company and make a profit. At the end of the day, the team with the most profit is the winner. This year, there were 4 rounds of the Business Game, each hosted by one of the 4 largest firms. The final was at PWC, were the first and second place winners from the 3 previous rounds competed to be crowned as the overall winner.
Having been part of the group of audit trainees assisting the learners in their groups, I have had firsthand experience of their excitement and determination to learn and to win! By the end of each day we had with them, they were more motivated to work hard at school in order to get funding to attend university and to achieve their dreams.
TAS is privileged to have contributed towards the prize money for the ultimate first, second and third placed winners in 2008 and 2009. We support the work that Thuthuka is doing and are honoured to have been able to add something to enlighten the lives of the eager learners.
Winterschool Blanket Drive
June 2009
In line with giving back to our community, a blanket drive was held during the popular annual Winterschool weekend. Each attendee was requested to donate a blanket to the cause.
A great response was received on this project and more than 50 blankets were collected.
These blankets were donated to the Doorenbacht crèche and will be used to keep the children warm during the winter.
Christmas Party
December 2008
TAS got into the Christmas spirit and decided to provide the under-privileged children of the Doorenbacht crèche with some much needed Christmas cheer.
Even Father Christmas put in a special appearance and assisted in the handing out the gifts to each of the children.
Giving back to our community is an important value for the TAS members and this has been incorporated as part of our future planning. May this only lead to great things!
